Airoli to Powai - Road miseries

Even though the Airoli road work is complete and the roads near IIT are widened, it takes more than 1 hour to travel from Airoli to L&T Powai. This is one of the most painful roads to travel in morning and evenings.

Reasons:

  • Bad road conditions
  • A very narrow railway bridge at Gandhinagar
  • Lot many cars on road
Speaking of bad road conditions, you can check the road near Airoli circle and towards the Airoli bridge. The tar road which was laid recently is in bad condition with lots of potholes. Then after you cross the toll bridge, the left half portion of the road is almost non-existent, it is full of potholes and mud.

After you cross this portion of the road, you take left on Eastern express highway. The highway is good condition but your miseries start when you take right for going towards Gandhinagar. When you take right, there is enough space on the wide road to have 6-7 lanes of traffic and all vehicles line up in 6-7 lanes. But the railway bridge after the next signal is wide enough only for 2 lanes. So now every day, this 6-7 lanes of traffic has to merge into 2 lanes. It takes half an hour or more to pass this stretch. Ideally based on the distance that you cover here, you should cross this portion in 3-4 minutes!!!! There are few thousand vehicles which pass every day and waste half an hour every day. A great amount of petrol is wasted on this stretch due to crawling traffic and also the precious time of all the commuters. In order to get ahead of each other, many times I see cars brushing each other, bikers using the distance between the two cars to move thru them and sometimes get sandwitched between them, and then drivers cursing each other, honking loudly. I have been seeing this condition for more than 2 years, but I have not seen any protest from people or politicians here. Also there is no progress from the civic authorities to widen the bridge.

This is the most painful stretch of the road. Once you cross this then you have to wait at few signals near IIT, Pizza hut, powai lake. Not sure why the flyovers were not constructed at these signals for un-interrupted traffic.

I hope people read this blog and come together to protest for widening the gandhinagar railway bridge.

Note: On the same road I traveled at 5 am in the morning to domestic Airport. I could reach airport in 35 minutes which was really amazing when there was no traffic. I hope someday I can reach Powai office in less than 30 minutes every day!!!!

Airoli Everyday Traffic Issues

2021 update - The roads have been improved a lot in last few years

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
22/04/2011

Now they want to test Airoli resident's patience even further!!!

The road from Airoli circle to start of the Airoli Bridge has been dug on both the sides at same time leaving only one late open on each side. Every morning while going towards bridge there is a massive build-up of traffic near the circle and it takes more than half an hour to go reach Airoli bridge. Everyone goes thru same mysery while coming back home.

Big question: Why is the road dug on both sides at the same time? Do you not care about the residents? Why should residents pay taxes to government when there is such total dis-regard to thier everyday comfort?

Please check my previous blog for more issues http://airoli-dinesh.blogspot.com/2011/03/airoli-jam.html

Airoli Jam

2021 Update - The roadwork is completed now in last few year and the roads in Airoli are much better

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Looks like the Airoli civic authorities are trying to test the patience of Airoli residents. There are two main roads that keeps Airoli traffic flowing. One that goes from Airoli circle towards Patni Campus and joins Thane-Belapur road and other one which goes from Circle straight to Thane-Belapur road.

The road work on the Airoli Circle to Patni road started two months back and is nearly half complete. One side of the road is closed because of this road, and the traffic was using one side only. This itself was causing lot of traffic jams near the Airoli circle and this road.

To add to the residents misery, the authorities decided to start work on the other main road and have dug that road also. Now both the roads are choked and it becomes nightmare for people living in this area to go out and come back to their home. Especially in the evening when you are all tired and want to get home quickly, you get stuck in traffic jams. The chocking of the main two roads have triggered jams in the internal streets also. Yesterday when I was coming home in the evening it took me one and half hours to reach from Airoli circle to Sector-19. I encountered jams on many roads and every alternate route I took was jammed. Earlier it could reach home in less than 10 minutes on the same road. It was really a nightmare and it forced me to start this blog.

I hope the civic authorities will give some considerations to the miseries of the residents and plan the work in such a way that it eases the miseries. They should immediately stop the work on the main road and put tar on it and open it for traffic. Till the time the other road (Airoli circle to Patni) work is not complete, they should not start work on the main road.
